The bare bare basics

The world teaches you more than any teacher

The Blue Lagoon in Comino

If you're reading this, you probably know that I am out in Malta on Erasmus with three other classmates from UL for the next six months. :D This exchange programme involves us going to a university here ( at the University of Malta) and taking our Journalism course here.

I thought I might do this blog a wee bit differently and not just tell you about my encounters in the Mediterranean but about stuff I wish I knew coming out here that might hopefully help someone coming here too!

Our first week consisted of us arriving in Malta, travelling to Lija to our accommodation, living in a farm house for a few days (no word of a lie!), being enrolled in university, going out A LOT and disastrous thunderstorms and downpours.

One thing I will say for Erasmus students is that being an Erasmus student is hard! I have a new-found respect for the ones that visit our university at home. You don't get your own timetable, you have to make one up for yourself based on what your hours are, what units you're allowed take and how many credits you need. The constant changing and signing of the learning agreement will be the bane of your life. Thankfully there is a stellar crew of other students in the same boat as you so you're not alone.

The accommodation we opted for was the University Residence accommodation. Despite what the name suggests, the accommodation is not on the university campus, it's about an 8 minute bus journey from the University Residence to the University. The accommodation is basic enough but absolutely brilliant craic. The girls and I are living together with seven other people in a house which can be a bit mental around dinner time :D

Our fabulous room :D

We live in shared rooms with two bunk beds, two wardrobes, a desk and a sink. You need to buy your own cutlery but there's a great cheap homeware shop JB's about a ten minute walk away which has everything. There's no kettle here (I don't know how I survived without tea for ten days, it still haunts me) but you can get a kettle in JB's too :D                                                                         There is a pool at the accommodation but no-one uses it yet because it's too cold. That's another thing, it is cold in Malta during January and February! I like an idiot, came out with only t-shirts and shorts to quickly find out that it's about 10 degrees too cold for that. Just cause the sun shines doesn't mean it's warm too!

But enough about me complaining... Now to the going out spots :D Paceville strip is where the main nightlife happens. There's late bars Footloose and Plush and Havana nightclub. There's also plenty of Irish bars aswell! The best nights to go out are definitely Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights (if my parents are reading this I promise I do go to college too! :D)

A Thursday night in Paceville

The first three weeks here have been amazing and I will write about them here for any of the nosier people among you :D My friend Laura is also writing a blog which will probably be a lot better than mine so if you're interested in that click here.

See You Siún!
